President Rouhani made the remarks during a session of the Supreme Council of Cultural Revolution on Tuesday, while referring to the recent victories of the Resistance Front agianst terrorists in Mosul, Aleppo, Tal Afar, Deir Ezzor and Arsal.
On Tuesday, the Syrian government forces' operation broke the three-year siege of the city of Deir Ezzor, located on the shores of the Euphrates River to the northeast of Damascus. The Syrian army supported by the Russian Aerospace Forces has been advancing toward Deir Ezzor from three directions as part of an operation to free the city launched in August.
Following the victory, a number of Iranian officials including Leader's senior adviser Ali Akbar Velayati, Iran’s security chief Ali Shamkhani, and Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif congradulated Syrian government and nation over the lifting of the blockade over the strategic city of Deir Ezzor. During his meeting with Russia's special envoy on Syria, Alexander Lavrentiev, on Tuesday in Tehran, Shamkhani stressed that the valuable outcomes of cooperation among Iran, Russia, Syria and the Resistance Front are emerging on the ground and political battles against terrorism.
Meanwhile, Syrian President Bashar Assad, in a telephone conversation with Deir Ezzor defense commanders, congratulated the city's defenders on the victory.
Russian President Vladimir Putin also extended congratulations to Russian and Syrian military with a large-scale victory over terrorists in Deir Ezzor.
