Iran aces Asian Karate Championships

TEHRAN, Jul. 17 (MNA) – Karate practitioners of Iran collected 42 medals to stand on top of the podium in all age categories of Asian Karate Championships in Kazakhstan.

Having attracted 660 athletes from 27 countries, the 14th Senior Karate-do Asian Championships and 16th Cadet and Junior Karate-do Asian Championships were competed from July 13-16 in the Kazakh capital of Astana.

The Iranian squads demonstrated authoritative performances in cadet, junior, under-21 and senior divisions firmly winning the top position in the prestigious Asian extravaganza.

The Persian karateka snatched a total of 20 gold, 12 silver and 11 bronze trophies to land atop table of medals. Japan finished second with 16 gold, eight silver and 14 bronze medals followed by host Kazakhstan who earned eight gold, six silver and 13 bronzes. The fourth to tenth positions were occupied by outfits from Saudi Arabia, Indonesia, Chinese Taipei, China, Jordan and Uzbekistan who bagged 17, 12, 10, 7, 6 and 6 medals respectively.

As of 2011, Asian Karate Championships have been held simultaneously in all age groups with the Japanese team winning the title in the past three editions. Iranian athletes, who had always ranked second, managed to take over Japan and win the title with distinction in the 2017 event.

Teams from Indonesia, the Islamic Republic of Iran, Japan, Malaysia, the Philippines, Saudi Arabia, Thailand and Uzbekistan were among teams participating in the tournament.
