Araghchi, Schmid meet in Vienna before joint commission meeting

TEHRAN, Jan. 10 (MNA) – Iran's Araghchi and EU’s Schmid met on Tuesday morning before co-chairing the 6th session of the Iran and 5+1 Joint Commission of JCPOA in the afternoon.

Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal and International Affairs Seyed Abbas Araghchi, along with Deputy Foreign Minister for European and American Affairs, Majid Takht-Ravanchi arrived in Vienna early on Tuesday and had a one-hour long preparatory meeting with EU’s Secretary General of the European External Action Service Helga Schmid started at 9:00 A.M. local time (11:30 A.M. Tehran Time). Araghchi and Schmid, on behalf of Federica Mogherini, are going to co-chair the current round of Joint Commission of JCPOA.

The sixth round of meetings of the Iran and 5+1 Joint Commission of JCPOA is slated to be held at 12:00 P.M. (14:30 P.M. Tehran Time) local time at Vienna’s Palais Coburg with the deputy-level representatives of the 7 sides of the nuclear deal. Another meeting between the Iranian side and Schmid is expected to be started at 11:00 A.M. local time. The meetings are to outline the agenda of the main talks of the afternoon.

Experts from Iran and US held a meeting on Monday. Esmaiel Baghaie headed the Iranian delegation of experts at Monday event.    

The current round of the Joint Commission’s meeting is held after the call of Iranian Foreign Minister Zarif who protested the extension of American anti-Iranian sanctions dubbed as ISA (Iran Sanctions Act) by the US Congress. Zarif wrote a letter to Mogherini on December 16. Iran deems the act as a violation of the nuclear deal.
