Mr. Behrouz Kamalvandi who was speaking to Arabic language Al-Alam TV on Monday, said that nuclear program encompassed diverse fields as mineral exploration and extraction, enrichment chain, residue management, applications in medicine, agriculture, and industry; “it is a fact that JCPOA restricted the enrichment capacity; however, it also practically allowed working of thousands of centrifuges, with next-generation centrifuges joining the cascades; we predict that by next 15 years, when restrictions are lifted on Iran’s nuclear program, the country will be self-sufficient in terms of production of nuclear fuel which will be still a feat with such slow a pace as present,” he told the Al-Alam program.
“The overall program has made significant progress; we have a prospect of generation of 20,000mW electricity from the nuclear reactors; JCPOA exerts no restriction on UF6 production, and only in the next step, the pace of enrichment is restricted with 50 centrifuges; this would not mean that activities before this borderline are restricted,” he emphasized. “UF6 produced inside is exported and we receive yellow cake of proportionate amount; in terms of reactor facilities, we plan to save Tehran reactor working through fuel produced domestically and also feed Arak reactor as well; we have a long-term vision of producing large-scale reactor fuel.”
Kamalvandi also touched an important case of nuclear propulsion for ships and submarines; “the Islamic Republic of Iran is now a modest power in having fleets; in the long run, the country will require propulsion options; propulsions would use different range of enriched fuel; thus, we would never set aside 20-percent enrichment capacity since we would not attain 95-per cent enrichment; this is important that reactors work well with these ranges,” he told Al-Alam.
