Marzieh Afkham told reporters on Sunday that many other Iranian nationals had faced unfounded charges of violating sanctions against Iran; “during recent years, diplomatic dynamism has been in action addressing their release and to persuade the courts that they have been innocent,” Afkham added.
“Those Iranians arrested outside the US have received verdicts of no guilty and been released; however, the US has been persistent that they be extradited to the US, and we will continue diplomatic attempts in their release as before,” she told reporters.
“The Islamic Republic of Iran has announced that arrest of its nationals on unfounded charges of violation of sanctions is breaching international law, and would emphasize that they are totally innocent,” Afkham asserted.
On Friday, a US court gave an 8-year sentence to Mozaffar Khazaei on charges of passing on information about military aircraft to individuals in Iran. British paper The Guardian report said that Mr. Khazaei had apologized for the act, saying that the emails were part of his application for a job in a university in Iran.
