On the eve of Islamic Republic Day which is celebrated on Farvardin 12 of the Iranian year (April 1), Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei agreed to pardon or commute prison terms of 809 convicts sentenced by various Iranian Public, Revolutionary and Military Courts.
The pardon was made at the request of the country's Judiciary Chief Ayatollah Sadeq Amoli Larijani and was accepted by Iran’s Leader on the occasion of Islamic Republic Day.
Clause 11 of Article 110 of the Constitution allows pardoning or commuting prison terms of qualified convicts at the order of the Leader of the Islamic Revolution.
The Article does not apply to all types of convicts, especially those who have been sentenced for their role in armed struggle against the Islamic Republic, armed or organized drug trafficking, rape, armed robbery, arms smuggling, abduction, bribery and embezzlement.
