Match-fixing to be eradicated in Iran’s football

TEHRAN, April 19 (MNA) -- Iranian Football Federation Disciplinary Committee Director Mojtaba Sharifi said on Sunday he is determined to eradicate match-fixing in the country.

Last week former Esteghlal defender Javad Zarrincheh accused Amir Ghalenoei of fixing a match in Iran Professional League (IPL) while he coached Esteghlal of Ahvaz back in 2002.

“The committee will not tolerate influencing the result of matches. We will make efforts to eradicate match-fixing in Iran’s football. There is no document in relation to match-fixing between Esteghlal and Esteghlal of Ahvaz,” Sharifi said.

He added that Alireza Vahedi Nikbakht can return to the national team despite a two-year ban from accompanying the national team.

“Nikbakht was not allowed to accompany Iran when Ali Daei was leading the national team. He can return to the team if Mohammad Mayelikohan (new coach) wants him,” Sharifi stated.
