U.S. President-elect Barack Obama said on Sunday that his administration will take a new approach toward Iran. Obama told ABC that "a new emphasis on respect and a new emphasis on being willing to talk, but also a clarity about what our bottom lines are."
“Undoubtedly the Islamic Republic of Iran will adopt position proportionate with the new behavior and action of Washington,” Foreign Ministry spokesman Hassan Qashqavi told a regular news briefing.
However, Qashqavi said Iran should wait and sea the Obama administration’s policy change toward Tehran.
“We have said before that we should see Obama’s change slogan in practice and see whether that this change slogan will lead to a major change in Americans’ stance toward Iran or not.”
Obama, who officially takes office on January 20, said he was concerned about Tehran's nuclear enrichment program. He also said he views Iran as a "genuine threat".
However, Qashqavi called on Obama not to repeat false accusations against Iran like the outgoing Bush administration.
What is important is that the new Obama team should not "repeat past statements and instances whose falsehood has been demonstrated by Iran," Qashqavi remarked.
The United States claims that Iran is seeking a weapons program under the cover of its civilian nuclear program. Tehran denies the charge.
Iran says its nuclear program is solely aimed at producing electricity.
Iran’s nuclear activities are constantly monitored by the UN’s International Atomic Energy Agency. In its repeated reports the IAEA has confirmed that it has seen no diversion in Iran’s nuclear program.
