Extralegal restrictions on press harm national interests: Rafsanjani

TEHRAN, Sept. 13 (MNA) -- Expediency Council Chairman Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani said here on Wednesday that imposing extralegal restrictions on the press will harm national interests.

“With the expansion of media outlets and the explosion of information in the global village, it is almost impossible to prevent the publication of news and information,” he told a meeting of members of a non-governmental newspapers association.

The publication of news through formal channels can create a transparent atmosphere for informing people of correct news and prevent false information from being disseminated, he added.

The press should also observe their professional obligations and reflect realities while taking into consideration the interests of the government and the people, he said.
