"Together, we can speed the efforts to clean the entire world from such a horrible practice," Ban Ki Moon stated in his message for the International Day for Slavery, established to remember the approval of an agreement for the repression of slavery and exploitation by the UN General Assembly on December 2, 1949, and the condemnation to now modern forms of slavery, such as forced labour, servitude, forced marriage and others.
Ban Ki Moon highlighted progress made in recent years, including the reduction of the number of children subjected to forced labour on the planet and the fostering of laws and policies to fight the phenomenon.
However, the International Labour Organization estimates reflect that 21 million people are trapped in situations of extreme exploitation, it regretted.
The Secretary-General noted the particular situation of vulnerability in which there are millions of people forced to flee their homes and countries by bloody conflicts.
They can be easy prey of traffickers and individuals seeking to profit from its desperate situation, he said.
