Abuses against refugees in European borders condemned

BELGRADE, Jul. 29 (MNA) – The violence against thousands of refugees stranded at European borders has increased since the closure of the Balkan route in March, humanitarian organizations stated Thursday.

Simon Burroughs, head of the NGO Doctors Without Borders in Serbia, said on Thursday that migrants stranded in the country and others in the Balkan region such as Hungary, Bulgaria and Macedonia, were victims of brutal mistreatment.

Burroughs said that attention given to those migrants has decreased, which has led to a worsening of their living conditions as well as an increase in abuse, even by government forces.

According to Burroughs, the living conditions in makeshift camps are not suitable for human beings, who do not have access to basic services, so their physical and mental health is affected and they are showing disorders such as depression, post-traumatic stress and anxiety.
