Iranian judoka reaches 3rd round of Abu Dhabi Grand Slam

TEHRAN, Nov. 01 (MNA) – Iran’s heavyweight judoka Javad Mahjub has defeated the Swedish representative to reach the 3rd round of 2015 Judo Grand Slam held in Abu Dhabi, UAE.

The third and final day of 2015 Abu Dhabi Judo Grand Slam is devoted to fighters of -90, -100 as well as +100kg weights and Iran’s only representative in -100kg weight category is present at the tournament.

Having a break at the first round, Mahjub won over the Swedish judoka Martin Pack reaching the third round. Martin Pack holds the 10th ranking in the world and had earlier snatched the gold medal at the Russian Grand Slam competitions.

Iran's representative is scheduled to fight against his Macedonian rival who is a member of the Emirates national team.

The city of Abu Dhabi is holding the Judo Grand Slam tournament as with participation of the world's best judo fighters; the tournament kicked off on October 30 and will wrap up today on November 1.

Iran's national judo team is seeking tickets to 2016 Rio Olympics and the Judo Grand Slam has a significant role in offering Olympic quotas.

Being the fourth Grand Slam of the year, Abu Dhabi tournament follows editions in Baku (AZE), Tyumen (RUS) and Paris (FRA).
