Iran to design wide-body aircraft

TEHRAN, May 31 (MNA) – Head of Iran’s Aerospace Research Institute has said the institute is currently working on a project to design a solar-powered wide-body aircraft.

Fathollah Ommi, Head of Iran’s Aerospace Research Institute, maintained the institute is currently working on two key projects of replacing the engine of IrAn-140 aircraft and designing a solar-powered wide-body aircraft.

He maintained the transfer of technology and design of the IrAn-140 aircraft had come at a considerable cost, therefore studies have been conducted to replace the aircraft’s engine to make it suitable for fly again.

The IrAn-140 is a license-built version of the An-140, assembled by HESA in Shahin Shahr, Iran, from complete knock-down kits supplied by Antonov, a turboprop regional airliner designed by Ukraine. After purchasing the production license for the An-140 from Ukraine in 2000, Iran built its first Iran-140 passenger plane in 2003.

All Iran-140 passenger jets were however ordered by President Rouhani to be banned from flying following a tragic passenger plane crash in the capital Tehran in August 2014.

Ommi further expressed hope that with the implementation of the results obtained from recent studies conducted on the IrAn-140 engines, this national aircraft would be able to fly again in near future.
