Iran backs efforts to secure Afghanistan, Ahmadinejad tells Zardari

TEHRAN, March 26 (MNA) – President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has said that Iran supports any plan that would help promote peace and security in regional countries, particularly Afghanistan.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran supports any plan that would help establish peace and security in Afghanistan and the region and would help combat terrorism and drugs,” Ahmadinejad stated during a meeting with Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari in the Tajik capital of Dushanbe on Monday.

The presidents of Iran, Afghanistan, and Pakistan held their fifth trilateral summit in Dushanbe on Sunday.

In his meeting with Zardari, Ahmadinejad also commented on the relations between the two countries, saying that Iran and Pakistan should share their experiences in all spheres.

The Pakistani president stated that war-torn Afghanistan will not see the light of peace unless all regional countries pool their efforts to help resolve problems facing Afghanistan.

Pakistan is grappling with certain problems originating in Afghanistan and therefore, is more keen to help solve the Afghan crisis, Zardari said.

He also stated that Pakistan expects Russia and China to take the measures necessary to help Afghanistan.

Elsewhere in his remarks, the Pakistani president said that Islamabad is keen to use Iran’s experiences in all areas.
