Iraqi Kurdistan independence referendum not a casus belli

TEHRAN, Aug. 25 (MNA) – Turkish PM said the independence referendum of the Iraqi Kurdish Regional would not constitute a casus belli for Turkey.

Prime Minister Binali Yıldırım said that the independence referendum of the Iraqi Kurdish Regional Government , due to be held on Sept. 25, would not constitute a casus belli for Turkey, reported Hurriyet Daily.

Yidrim said, "Between whom does a war break out? Between a state and another state. We do not recognize them as a state".

"In any case, this decision should be canceled," he added.

The premier's remarks came after the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) leader Devlet Bahçeli stated the referendum should be a cause of war for Turkey if necessary.

Speaking to reporters on his return flight from Vietnam today, he also said Turkey and Russia had reached an agreement on the procurement of the S-400 missile defense system from Russia, and the final decision would be made by the executive committee of Turkey’s defense industry.

Yıldırım also said Turkey was working in cooperation with Russia and Iran in Syria, and there should be no reason for the United States and Turkey to be on opposite sides.
