Iranian filmmaker Mohammad Rasoulof’s 'A Man of Integrity' won the top prize in the Un Certain Regard section at the Cannes Film Festival on Saturday. A diverse international selection of 17 other titles were vying for the top prize in this category.
Rasoulof’s sixth feature, 'A Man of Integrity' depicts the life of a politically liberal goldfish farmer battling corporate oppression in Northern Iran.
The Iranian filmmaker previously competed in Un Certain Regard with 2011’s 'Au revoir' and 2013’s 'Manuscripts Don’t Burn,' winning Best Director for the former.
'April's Daughter' by Michel Franco won the jury prize. 'Wind River' by Taylor Sheridan won the best direction award. Jasmine Trinca of Sergio Castellito's 'Fortunata' (Lucky) won best acting prize and Mathieu Amalric took a best screenwriting prize for 'Barbara'.
Uma Thurman led the jury for the Cannes sidebar. Other jury members included directors Joachim Lafosse and Mohamed Diab, actor Reda Kateb and Karlovy Vary festival director Karel Och.
The top prizes for the main competition selection will be awarded Sunday night. Iran does not have any representative for the main competition. Last year, ‘The Salesman’ by Asghar Farhadi won the Best Script award and Best Actor award at Cannes’ main competition section.
