Directed by Asghar Farhadi, the film won prizes for best movie, best actress, and best screenplay at the 13th Santo Domingo International Film Festival, which took place February 10 to 19 in Dominican.
Farhadi was named best director at the Santo Domingo festival.
Golshifteh Farahani grabbed the best actress award, while the best screenplay award was also presented to Farhadi, the official website of the festival reported on Friday.
This year the guest country of the festival was Mexico and the festival was dedicated to the late Dominican film critic, Arturo Rodriguez, who also founded the festival.
Starring Shahab Hosseini, Golshifteh Farahani, Mani Haqiqi, Saber Abar and Merila Zarei, “About Elly” tells the story of middle class Iranians whose trip to the Caspian Sea turns into a disaster as they try to maintain their social customs.
“About Elly” has won several international awards, which include the Silver Bear for best director at the Berlinale 2009 and the Best Narrative Feature category at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2009.
The movie also represented Iranian cinema in the Best Foreign Language Film category at the 82nd Annual Academy Awards in 2010.
Farhadi’s latest film, “Nader and Simin: A Separation”, won the Golden Bear for the best film at the Berlin film festival last week as its cast ensemble received the best actor and actress Silver Bears at the event.
