Iran, EU discuss progress of joint nuclear safety project

TEHRAN, May. 09 (MNA) – A visiting delegation from the European Union met on Wed. with Mr. Salehi, the Director of Iran’s Nuclear Safety Center, to discuss the progress of Iran-EU joint project on nuclear safety.

The first joint project aimed at strengthening bilateral nuclear safety cooperation between Iran and EU was discussed on Wed. in Tehran by the EU delegation, headed by Pascal Daures the Head of European Commission’s Sector for Nuclear Safety Preventive and Corrective Actions, and the Iranian side led by Hojjatollah Salehi, the Director of Iran’s Nuclear Safety Center.

In the meeting, the two sides exchanged views on bilateral interactions and the progress of the first project aimed at strengthening nuclear safety in Iran’s Nuclear Safety Center, a project being carried out by ENCO Company with finance provided by the European Union.

In addition to voicing content with the benefits reaped so far, the two sides also voiced hope to achieve better results in the course of cooperation between Iran’s Nuclear Safety Center and the European Union.

In July 2017, Iran and Europe officially announced the start of the 2.5-million-euro joint project on nuclear safety. The project was signed earlier in April within the framework of the 2015 nuclear deal.

Under the agreement, Tehran-EU nuclear safety cooperation will last for a period of three and a half years.

One of its key objectives is to enhance Iran’s nuclear safety capabilities in different spheres, including the establishment of a nuclear safety center as foreseen in the JCPOA.

Under the project, the EU will also support the Iranian Nuclear Regulatory Authority (INRA) in developing a nuclear regulatory framework, working toward Iran's accession to several international nuclear conventions, as well as reviewing the results of the stress test to take place at the Bushehr nuclear power plant.

The project also seeks to provide more training opportunities to Iranian experts with regard to nuclear safety procedures.
