Jaberi discusses Astana meeting with Mekdad, UN envoy

TEHRAN, Jan. 17 (MNA) – Iran’s deputy FM Jaberi Ansari in a meeting with Syrian FM Faisal Mekdad and a phone conversation with UN Deputy Special Envoy for Syria, discussed the latest details on the upcoming Astana talks on Syrian situation.

Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Arab-African Affairs, Hossein Jaberi Ansari, in a Tuesday meeting with Syrian Foreign Minister Faisal Mekdad who accompanied Syrian Prime Minister Imad Khamis on a visit to Iran, conferred on the latest developments regarding the upcoming Astana meeting that aims to reach a political solution for the six-year conflict in Syria by bringing the opposition groups to the negotiating table with government representatives.

Later on Tuesday, Jaberi Ansari also held talks on phone with UN Deputy Special Envoy for Syria Ramzy Ezzeldin Ramzy who will head the United Nation’s delegation present at Astana meeting. The two sides discussed details on the approaching Astana talks.

The talks are slated for January 23 and 24 in the Kazakh capital city between representatives of Syrian government and the opposition groups. Russia, Turkey and Iran and a UN delegation will attend the meeting as observers.
