Yazd hosting Intl. Workshop on Qanat and Architecture

YAZD, Nov. 16 (MNA) – International workshop on qanat and architecture is underway in Yazd, November 14-23.

After a successful workshop in Tehran in 2012 on qanats, Hydrocity Workshop, UNESCO’s International Center on Qanats & Historic Hydraulic Structures (ICQHS) has been hosting the second round of the workshop in an attempt to promote cooperation of relevant international organizations.

The workshop also called Sustainable Development for Cities is a joint venture by French High Architectural School, French National School of Higher Studies of Architecture and Landscape Architecture, and Yazd University College of Arts and Architecture to bring the students, domestic as well as international, to an understanding of qanat as a sustainable water source, factors threatening city qanat canals, the role of qanat as connecting historical cities to newly built cities and suburban regions, working out solutions for more sustainable operation of current qanats, and resuming activity of qanats abandoned as useless.

The workshop provides unique opportunities to study a historical city in the heart of the desert, and where water shortage and climatic conditions have given birth to magnificent architecture quite in harmony with nature. The historical past of Yazd would teach many lessons of great contribution to solving contemporary problems now.

The workshop also focuses on the systems by which qanat as an ancient underground structure would be reinstated as the source providing city’s water.

The provincial Cultural Heritage Organization office has also sponsored the holding of the workshop along with other bodies.
