Santur virtuoso Parviz Meshakatian will conduct the 16-piece group which includes Shahram Nazeri on vocals, Bahram Sa’ed and Keyvan Saket on tar, Jamshid Andalibi on ney, Behdad Baba’i on setar, Ardeshir Kamkar on kamancheh, and Bijan Kamkar on daf.
The group is slated to perform several memorable pieces including Lale-ye Bahar (Spring Tulip), Khazan (Autumn), Sama Ava (Song of Sama), and Compatriot (Hamvatan).
Meshkatian previously performed Sama Ava with vocalist Iraj Bastami, who was killed in the earthquake which hit the city of Bam on December 26, 2003.
The Aref Ensemble has not performed live in Iran since 1998 when the group appeared at Vahdat Hall in Tehran. However, the group has performed some concerts in a number of European countries over the past seven years.
The group won the first prize of the Spirit of the Earth Festival in England in 1992.
Meshkatian's collaboration with prominent vocalist Mohammadreza Shajarian over the years produced some of the most beautiful recordings of Iranian contemporary classical music. The collaboration was terminated for personal reasons.
The Aref Ensemble was founded by Meshkatian, Hossein Alizadeh, and Mohammadreza Lotfi in 1977. Alizadeh and Lotfi left the group a few years later.
