Ex-security chief urges key figures to step in to restore unity

TEHRAN, Jan. 6 (MNA) – Hojatoleslam Hasan Rohani, a member of the Expediency Council, has said that the Islamic Revolution’s key figures should enter the scene to establish calm and unity in the society.

The former Supreme National Security Council chief also said that extremists, lawbreakers, and disrespecters of the religious sanctities should be ostracized.

Commenting on the Ashura unrest in Tehran and the following demonstrations staged by those loyal to the Islamic Republic to condemn rioters’ actions, he said the nation wanted to say to the world that the status of Imams, Ashura, and velayat faghih (rule of the supreme jurisprudent) are still high in the eyes of Iranians.

“People wanted to say that we won’t tolerate any move which is aimed at threatening the legitimacy of our establishment and our national interests,” he opined.

On the ways to resolve the current political conflicts, he said all political groups should respect law. Even if someone has committed an offence “we should just deal with them based on law.”

People can criticize the government, but it is wrong if anyone thinks that any problem can be solved by calling people to take to the streets, he added.

In Ashura (the martyrdom anniversary of Imam Hussein (AS)) some protesters took to the streets in Tehran and disrespected religious sanctities and damaged public properties.
