Over 50s comprise 50% of the country’s illiteracy rate, Parviz Kowsary said.
According to Kowsary, the percentage difference between the male and female literacy rate has dramatically changed over the past years, falling from over 23% in 1979 to under 8% in 2006.
In the time period of the Islamic Revolution, the average literacy rate was 47.5%, and now, Kowsary added, the rate has reached 86%.
He also said that at present 80% of Iranian women and 89% of men are literate.
Elsewhere in his remarks, Kowsary said that literacy rate in rural areas has jumped from 30% in 1979 to 75% in recent years.
And in urban areas, the rate has increased from 65% to 79% in the time period, Kowsary added.
The percentage difference between rural areas and urban areas has also changed dramatically over the past 30 years, dropping from 35% to below 14%, he explained.
