Obama orders 17,000 additional troops for Afghanistan

President Barack Obama on Tuesday ordered 17,000 additional soldiers and Marines for Afghanistan in an urgent bid to “stabilize a deteriorating situation” in the country.

Afghanistan was put into oblivion after the Bush administration launched war on Iraq in 2003. The negligence led to the reemergence of Taliban in the Central Asian country.

"This increase is necessary to stabilize a deteriorating situation in Afghanistan, which has not received the strategic attention, direction and resources it urgently requires," Obama said, according to Los Angeles Times.

In a hint that his strategy would include more than military power, Obama said he would "employ all elements" of U.S. government resources to meet achievable goals, with help from U.S. allies.

Obama said that "urgent attention and swift action" were required because "the Taliban is resurgent in Afghanistan, and al-Qaeda . . . threatens America from its safe-haven along the Pakistani border."
