British and French nuclear submarines collide

British and French nuclear submarines, which both have been carrying nuclear warheads, have collided deep in the Atlantic Ocean.

The crash between British HMS Vanguard and French submarine Le Triomphant is believed to have occurred on February 3 or 4, the Belfast Telegraph said in a report posted on its website.

A senior British Navy source told the Sun newspaper the potential consequences of such a collision were "unthinkable".

He said, "It's very unlikely there would have been a nuclear explosion. But a radioactive leak was a possibility. Worse, we could have the crew and warheads. That would have been a national disaster."

Britain’s Defense Ministry refused to confirm the incident had taken place, saying it was against its policy to comment on submarine operations.
