“Iran has taken good measures in equipping schools by investing 4 billion dollars in this field and has reduced the numbers of unsafe schools down to 40 percent in the period from 2006 to 2014 which is the highest rate of retrofitting schools against natural disasters in the whole world,” said Gary Lewis, UN Resident Coordinator in Iran, in the second meeting of Safe School Leaders held in Tehran on Monday.
“Thousands of schools have become disaster-resistant in Iran and despite various earthquakes in the past few years, none of the resistant schools have received any damage,” he said.
He lauded Iran for incorporating the global school safety program, expressing hope that other countries would also follow Iran’s steps in this regard.
“Reducing poverty, improving general health, confronting the climate change, and decreasing the risks of natural disasters are the five objectives we are currently following up in Iran,” said Lewis.
The Second Meeting of Safe School Leaders kicked off in Tehran on Sunday. The two-day event was hosted by Ministry of Education of Iran and attended by representatives of 23 countries.
