Iraq today has ‘democratic structure’: Larijani

TEHRAN, Sep. 12 (MNA) – Iran Parliament speaker after a Sat. meeting with his Iraqi counterpart said Iraq has a democratic structure and Iran has always stood by Iraqi government and people.

Speaking among reporters after a meeting with Iraqi Parliament Speaker Salim al-Jabouri, Ali Larijani maintained that Iran has supported Iraq even during the most difficult situations and while terrorist groups have been seeking to disrupt the internal structure of the Arab country in recent years.

“Fortunately, the two countries’ parliaments have established good and friendly relations and as such we have regular consultations in various sections of the parliaments and on various issues of mutual interest,” said Larijani.

The senior Iranian official noted that the talks with his Iraqi counterpart evolved around ways of deepening political ties, establishing substantial security, strengthening bilateral cooperation in fight against terrorism and expanding the level of trade transactions between the two countries.

Larijani added that the Iraqi speaker has also presented a report on regional developments and the country’s decisions on forming national reconciliation in Iraq.

“I have confidence that the visit of Iraq’s parliament speaker to Iran will conclude successfully since the results of this visit will further improve the two countries’ relations and lead to more peace and security,” said Larijani.

The Iraqi official, who is visiting Iran for the third time since he took office in 2014, maintained that in the past year over 200 visits have taken place among the two countries’ officials in the field of legislation and various security and economic agreements have been signed.

Expressing his support for Iran nuclear deal, Salim al-Jabouri added “we praise the efforts of Iranian negotiators for reaching an agreement and hope that the agreement will boost security in the region.”

Al-Jabouri added that Iraq is facing a great challenge today, namely the ISIL, in various parts of the country, saying “there is also a pseudo-economic crisis in Iraq and the country cannot fight it alone. We need the help from regional countries and for this reason I have had talks with the Iranian Parliament speaker.”

Iraqi Parliament Speaker Salim al-Jabouri arrived in the Iranian capital of Tehran this morning to hold talks with senior officials of the Islamic Republic. During his stay in Tehran, the Iraqi parliament speaker will also hold talks with President Hassan Rouhani and Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif. A number of Iraqi lawmakers are accompanying Jabouri during the visit.
