Iraq calls on Iran for support against extremism

TEHRAN, Sep. 12 (MNA) – Iraqi Parliament Speaker al-Jabouri while lauding Iran for its assistance during crisis, called on the Islamic Republic to maintain its position alongside Iraq in resolving the country’s internal conflicts and fight against extremism.

The visiting Iraqi Parliament Speaker Salim al-Jabouri made the remarks on a Saturday meeting in Tehran with Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif. The two sides discussed various bilateral issues and the current developments in Iraq.

Iranian foreign minister for his part attached great significance to peace and security in Iraq and the active participation of all Iraqi parties in building the future of the country, adding “Iraq is one of the most influential Arab and Muslim countries and must regain its proper place in the region as soon as possible.”

While expressing hope toward the resolution of Iraq’s internal conflicts through tactful measures taken by the country’s officials, Zarif added “we will always stand by Iraqi government and nation in internal, regional and international issues especially in the fight against violence and extremism.”   

The Iranian top diplomat expressed hope that the process of reform in Iraq would reach a desirable conclusion through consultation and cooperation among all Iraqi parties and legal entities.

Zarif further added that the Islamic Republic is ready to form a joint front with Iraq in the fight against terrorism and extremism.

Iraqi Parliament Speaker Salim al-Jabouri, accompanied by a number of Iraqi lawmakers, arrived in Tehran on Saturday morning to hold talks with senior officials of the Islamic Republic. During his stay in Tehran. The Iraqi parliament speaker has also held talks with his Iranian counterpart Ali Larijani and will also meet with President Hassan Rouhani.
