Iran-Jordan Cooperation Key to Regional Peace and Security

TEHRAN, September 3 (Mehr News Agency) – King Abdullah II of Jordan, accompanied by a high-ranking delegation, arrived in Iran on Tuesday for a two-day visit. Abdullah met with Iranian President Mohammad Khatami as well as other officials.

Political analysts believe that the visit will open a new chapter in Tehran-Amman cooperation.

During their meeting, that was only the second since they held talks on the sidelines of the Millennium Summit in New York in September 2000, Khatami and Abdullah discussed issues of mutual interest such as the situation in post-war Iraq and the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.

Iran and Jordan have realized that it is beneficial to keep channels of communication open. The rapid trend of developments in the region calls for interaction among regional countries based on mutual respect in order to achieve development and establish lasting peace and security in the Middle East.

Iran's diplomacy focuses on detente, trust-building, the expansion of ties with other countries in the region, and restoring ties with all Islamic states. In this regard, political analysts have called the visit a turning point in Amman-Tehran relations.

In light of the two country's historical and religious affinities, the increase in trade exchanges, scientific and academic cooperation, and cultural and artistic interaction will open new horizons for Tehran-Amman cooperation.

In fact, there is great potential for bilateral cooperation in many areas. The Islamic Republic of Iran is ready to provide technical and scientific assistance to Jordan and to invest in its petrochemical, gas, and construction industries.

Moreover, the Islamic Republic of Iran and the Kingdom of Jordan hold similar views on regional and international developments.

Iran-Jordan cooperation will not harm any country and will help restore peace and security in the region. All Muslim countries need to coordinate their efforts to solve the problems of the region. This visit will definitely be a good beginning for the Jordanian and Iranian people and for Arab-Iranian relations and the region.
