Iran’s exclusive hydroconversion processing acknowledged internationally

TEHRAN, Dec. 17 (MNA) -– The Research Institute of Petroleum Industry (RIPI) has succeeded in registering industrial hydroconversion processing internationally by means of nanotechnology. It is going to be one of the century’s greatest transformations in oil industry and related economic sectors, project director of RIPI Seyyed Javad Ahmadpanah announced on Saturday.

This exclusive processing is a combination of hydrogenization plus cracking via a catalytic filtering that is called hydrocracking. It breaks the residuals of heavy crude oil into lighter components and has various applications in turning the heavy crude into lighter one. The unique procedure employed by the center allows 95% conversion rate under low operation pressure in the presence of nanocatalysts and hydrogen. So the end result is a lighter crude oil with higher API. All the heavy metals are also eliminated in this catalytic breakdown and the amount of sulfur is minimized.

The practical prospect of this project is going to play a major role in turning the country’s great reserves of heavy and super heavy crude oil into lighter oil by establishing hydroconversion units in oilfields across the land, the project manager said in conclusion.
