Iran opens AFC U-20 Futsal C’ship with win

TEHRAN, May 17 (MNA) – Iran pulled out a sweeping 6-0 victory over Mongolia on Wednesday in their opening encounter at the first edition of AFC U-20 Futsal Championship underway in Thailand.

Competing in Group D of the newly-born tournament, the Persian side demonstrated a stirring display against Mongolian opponents who had previously defeated the United Arab Emirates one day earlier.

The futsal squad of Iran took a 5-0 lead in the first half as Mohammad Taheri, Sahand Rezapour, captain Tohid Lotfi and Hamzen Kadkhoda found the net at Hua Mark Indoor Stadium of Bangkok.

Despite Mongolia’s efforts, Mahdi Karimi bagged a sixth for Iran in the 30th minute to show Iran’s capability in advancing to the tournament’s next phase.

Iran’s next game will be competed on May 18 against the United Arab Emirates while Mongolians will face Kyrgyzstan.

The AFC U-20 Futsal Championship Thailand 2017 is taking place in the Thai capital from May 16 to 26, 2017 at the Bangkok Arena and the Huamark Indoor Stadium.

There are 21 teams in the tournament, consisting of one (1) group of six (6) teams and three (3) groups of five (5) Teams. The group winners and runners-up from each group, eight teams in total, will qualify for the knockout stage (quarter-finals).

The four winners of the quarter-finals will qualify to the semi-finals, and subsequently the winners of the semi-finals will advance to the final while the two losing teams will play in the third placing match.

The event marks the first edition of the AFC U-20 Futsal Championship, the biennial international futsal championship organized by the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) for the men's youth national teams of Asia.

The tournament will serve as qualifying for the futsal tournament at the 2018 Summer Youth Olympics in Buenos Aires, with the winner and the runner-up qualifying for the boys' tournament, where they will be represented by their U-18 representative teams.
