Women: Serious, Creative, Responsible Administrators

TEHRAN Jan. 20 (Mehr News Agency) -– Despite the high percentage of educated Iranian women, they have not occupied managerial positions in large numbers. But their creative presence and their participation in various scientific, intellectual, technical, and social affairs has been highly influential in recent years.

What are the outstanding attributes distinguishing women's creativity and talents? Numerous directors, administrators and managers throughout the country admit no matter which profession the women occupy, they are serious, creative and responsible; however, women’s salaries are lower than men doing the same job and the women’s rights are trampled upon in most cases.

"Males and females have equal amounts of creativity, but it flourishes depending on the cultural condition of the family, the relationship between the child and parents, and the education programs in their schools," psychologist Ali Mirzabeigi said. The main nucleus of creativity takes shape in childhood, and the parents' relationship with their child with proper educational programs is highly significant.

Mirzabeigi said education programs in the schools should be pivotal not relying on memorization of text books; students’ talents will flourish through learning materials put at their disposal in schools facilitating the educational process.

"Sometimes women encounter hindrances in society, such as families’ expectations of their daughters. People suppose there is no need to earn money through females’ labor, this duty being carried out by males. Because of this mentality creativity among females is stifled," he said.

According to Mirzabeigi, all factors including family, school, cultural affairs and office atmosphere determine the creation of either a stereotypical environment or a place promoting creativity and mental growth. Parents, teachers, principals, organizations, and working environments can play a prevalent part in a woman’s education or they can stifle creativity.

Referring to the new system of education, Mirzabeigi said drastic measures must be adopted to revise text books. The natural differences existing among girls and boys, scientific training of teachers, familiarization of parents with female suffrage and also revision of cultural materials should be among the main objectives of the responsible authorities to lay the ground for the flourishing of women's creativity in society.

"All human beings can participate in creating a new educational, cultural and social system to remove cultural restrictions, particularly for the creativity of girls," Mirzabeigi said.

He stressed that creative females welcome challenges and are seeking new opportunities and they cannot tolerate the current conditions.

"Women express their willingness to demonstrate their ability toward the eradication of various problems, in all areas of society. Eager to demonstrate their capabilities women are resolved to prevail over their societal shortcomings in comparison with others," he said.

Traditional Culture Main Obstruction

Sociologist Yaqub Musavi explains that if all existing educational and cultural facilities are provided for women, they have the determination to realize their talents.

He said sustainable social and cultural development is a prerequisite for promoting women’s creativity in diverse fields. Accordingly, any investment in human resources allowing women to develop their creativity is of considerable importance in the educational system.

Musavi believes that in order to achieve socioeconomic progress, every effort should be made to train talented people and help every individual realize his/her ability in minor and major development plans.

He said some traditions, social customs, bad planning, women's unawareness regarding their capabilities resulting in a lack of self-confidence, and also cultural, social and economic impoverishment may prevent women from seeking skills and training which would enable them to play a role in major socio-cultural planning projects.

Musavi stated that as long as women don’t believe in themselves or understand their ability to take part in all spheres of social life, they will not escape from all these restrictions.

The paradox of opportunities for and restrictions on the development of women's creativity will no doubt continue in the future. These complex issues are not easily resolved. But first the existing obstacles in the way of development in the Islamic Republic of Iran must be removed, in an effort to pave the way for reducing the problems women are currently grappling with.
