Iran should revise relations with France: MP

TEHRAN, Sept. 18 (MNA) -- The level of relations between Iran and France should be revised, MP Kazem Jalali said here on Tuesday.

The hostile stance French officials have recently adopted toward Iran is being studied by the Majlis National Security and Foreign Policy Committee, Jalali told reporters.

French Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner said on Sunday that his country must prepare for the possibility of war against Iran over its nuclear program, but added that he did not believe any military action was imminent.

Kouchner’s comments follow a similarly aggressive statement by French President Nicolas Sarkozy, who said last month in his first major foreign policy speech since taking office that a diplomatic push by the world’s powers was the only alternative to “an Iranian bomb or the bombing of Iran”, Reuters reported.

Iran is a signatory to the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and thus has the right to utilize nuclear technology for peaceful purposes.

The objection has always existed that the level of Iran’s economic relations with other countries does not match the level of its political relations, and the government should revise relations with France as soon as possible, said Jalali, who is the rapporteur of the Majlis National Security and Foreign Policy Committee.

Following the policies of U.S. President George W. Bush, which are hated throughout the world, will create problems for the French nation, the MP added.

Iran is totally prepared to confront any threats, and France can try its luck, Jalali stated, adding, “However, launching a new war in the region will have many repercussions for them and the major powers.”
