SCO must go beyond condemning US-Israel aggression: Iran VP

TEHRAN, Oct. 20 (MNA) –Iran's First Vice President Mohammadreza Aref has said Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) must move beyond merely condemning US-Israeli aggression and sanctions imposed against Iran, and also strengthen its economic power.

Speaking at the meeting of Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO)’s Prime Ministers, held in Tajik capital of Dushanbe, the vice president emphasized the economic consequences of the US unilateral measures taken against the independent states.

In the beginning, Aref thanked the government and people of Tajikistan for hosting the meeting and praised the SCO secretary-general and his colleagues for facilitating the gathering.

A sustainable response to shared economic threats cannot be limited merely to condemning them; rather, Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) members must strengthen their own economic capacities., he opined.

Aref presented Iran’s proposals for accelerating the establishment of an independent development bank, forming an energy consortium, expanding trade using national currencies, and developing transit corridors.

He cited the deaths of more than 157 schoolchildren children in Minab Elementary School during the US-Israeli military aggression waged against Iran on February 28, stating that education is a fundamental human right.

Aref said the United States and Israel violated the international law, the UN Charter and international humanitarian law during their February 28 military aggression waged against Iran.

The vice president went on to say that attacks killed the Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei and schoolchildren on the first day, as well as numerous other innocent civilians, and targeted residential, educational, and medical facilities and infrastructure.

He added that Iran’s Armed Forces and united people inflicted a heavy defeat on the aggressors.

The Iranian vice president also expressed appreciation for the SCO and its member states for condemning the aggressors and armed attacks, highlighting the need to hold those responsible accountable.

He said it was encouraging to see cultural and humanitarian engagement within the organization, underscoring the importance of strengthening cooperation on humanitarian issues.

The remarks come amid heightened US military activity in West Asia and increasingly hostile rhetoric by American officials against the Islamic Republic.

Tehran has repeatedly warned that US bases and naval assets across the region will be targeted in response to any renewed aggression against Iranian territory.
