The incident occurred in the northern city of Ovruch, as the perpetrator was being checked by the border guard.
“A 23-year-old Kharkiv resident, who was carrying the explosive device, died. Three women, aged 29, 58, and 82, all [local] residents of the Korosten district, also suffered fatal injuries,” the police said in a statement.
Twelve others were injured and taken to hospital for treatment.
Preliminary information suggests that the man who set off the grenade was wanted by the authorities, Ukrainian news website Ukrinform reported.
Police, pyrotechnicians, and forensic experts from the regional headquarters are investigating, and the area of the blast remains cordoned off as authorities work to determine the motive behind the attack.
Although it is located 40 km from Belarus, Ovruch railway station is a border control area.
