TEHRAN, May 17 (MNA) – The 70th Cannes Film Festival will open today with a speech by Iranian filmmaker Asghar Farhdi, winner of best screenplay for ‘The Salesman’ in the previous edition.

Iranian Oscar-winning director Asghar Farhadi, whose highly-acclaimed ‘The Salesman’ won the Best Screenplay and Best Actor awards at Cannes last year, will open this year’s edition of the French film festival with a speech.

The 70th annual Cannes Film Festival is currently taking place from 17 to 28 May 2017, in Cannes, France. Spanish film director and screenwriter Pedro Almodóvar has been selected as the President of the Jury for the festival with Italian actress Monica Bellucci hosting the opening and closing ceremonies.

Iran is represented at Cannes this year by ‘A Man of Integrity’ directed by Mohammad Rasoulof in the Un Certain Regard section, '24 Frames' by Abbas Kiarostami in the 70th anniversary events, ‘Lunch Time’ by Alireza Ghasemi in the short film section, and ‘Animal’ by Bahman and Bahram Ark in the Cinéfondation section, which focuses on films made by students at film schools. 

Iranian animated piece ‘Release from Heaven’ by Ali Noori Oskouei will also have its market premier May 22 as opening film of Animation Day in Cannes film festival.
