Fiuzi’s magic squares on display in Niavaran

TEHRAN, May 16 (MNA) -- Artworks by architect and painter Yahya Fiuzi are currently on display at the Niavaran Cultural Center.

Entitled “Beyond Numbers, Magic Squares, Paintings and Sketches”, the exhibit will run until May 30.

Artworks of the 71-year old architect are based on numbers and the design of magic squares. Over 90 pieces by Fiuzi are scheduled for display throughout the globe within the next two years.

Fiuzi had originally drawn these sketches in oil color on small papers. He turned the designs into 3-D diagrams around 1992.

“During a visit to the city of Yazd in 1974, a torn, folded piece of textile in an antique store caught my attention. On this delicate fabric was wrought a table of 10,000 numbers. The main square was divided into 10,000 smaller ones and the numbers were placed inside the squares in a special order in red and black,” he stated.

“I did not know the purpose of this square or the order of numbers, but I realized that if one adds up the numbers along any vertical or horizontal line, the result would be the same,” he added.

“I also learned that these tablets are called magic squares,” he concluded.

Born in Mashad, Yahya Fiuzi is the creator of a comprehensive geometry of numbers based upon Magic Squares.

His work has been displayed as an interactive and traveling exhibition sponsored by the National Science Foundation (NSF), Mathematical Association of America (MMA), American Architectural Foundation (AAF), Smithsonian Institute and the Association of Science Technology Centers (ASTC).

Yahya Fiuzi’s recent works in Tehran include the Tehran International Conference Center and the Farabi Performing Art and Cultural Center.
