IAEA Resolution, Clear Example of U.S. Interference: Paper

TEHRAN –- The German newspaper Die Welt on Sunday said that the recent resolution by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) against Tehran setting an October 31 deadline to clarify all questions about its nuclear energy program indicates that the U.S. and the IAEA have a covert relationship in dealing with the Islamic Republic.

In an article entitled “A Completely Special Relationship”, Die Welt, wrote that the IAEA resolution is a clear example of U.S. interference in the decision-making process of the agency.

It said that the remarks of the U.S. special representative to the IAEA, Kenneth Brill, made after the latest meeting of the agency’s Board of Governors, in which he said that the U.S. regards the resolution as a good solution, showed Washington’s satisfaction with the outcome of the meeting.

Die Welt noted Iran’s strong reaction to the resolution and highlighted the remarks of Iran’s special representative to the IAEA, Ali Akbar Salehi, who stated that Iran would reconsider its cooperation with the agency and might even quit.

The paper also mentioned the reaction of the Iranian press, which called the resolution "political" and "illegitimate, illegal, and unworkable".

Die Welt said the U.S.-led war against Iraq had created a bad atmosphere in the region.

It wrote that IAEA Director Mohamed ElBaradei called the U.S. allegations that Iraq had bought weapons-grade enriched uranium from Niger false.

Die Welt also noted that the U.S. provides some 25 percent of the IAEA budget and wrote that the "unusual support" of IAEA spokeswoman Melissa Fleming speaks of a "completely special relationship" between the agency and the White House.
