Unity is secret to Iraq’s success: Ahmadinejad

TEHRAN, June 12 (MNA) -- President Mahmud Ahmadinejad held talks with Iraqi Vice-President Adel Abdul Mehdi here on Monday.

The president stressed the need for further expansion of bilateral ties in all areas.

Ahmadinejad said Iran and Iraq enjoy deep religious, historical, and cultural bonds, adding, “The countries should exploit the potential to expand mutual ties.”

He described the election and the establishment of new government in Iraq and efforts for promoting security as an achievement for all Muslims.

“Maintaining unity to protect national interests and dignity is the secret to success, therefore, the Iraqis should not allow the occupiers, who seek to plunder their resources and create insecurity, reach their goals,” the president noted.

For his part, Abdul Mehdi said, “The enemies seek to block the development of Iraq, but they will come up against a wall with the vigilance of the Iraqi people.”

He underlined the need for boosting Iran-Iraq cooperation, adding, “Iraq seeks to make use of Iran’s capabilities and experiences in various spheres particularly in water, electricity, and oil projects.”

“We believe that the two countries’ economic and commercial ties have the potential to go far beyond the current levels,” he noted.
