Assaluyeh’s DMC unit design and engineering to be done by yearend

TEHRAN, Dec. 24 (MNA) -– Construction contract of a DMC (dimethyl carbonate) industrial plant in Assaluyeh with production capacity of 80,000 bpd went into effect today and design and engineering stages of the plan will be finalized by yearend, director of DMC Process Project at Research Institute of Petroleum Industry (RIPI) Mansur Bazmi told the Persian service of ISNA.

The agreement inked between RIPI and Pars Oil and Gas Company (POGC) is aimed at removal of existing mercaptans (C1- C3, if light ones) and sulfur from condensate produced at phases 4 and 5 of SP. “Demercaptanization of crude oil and condensate by Iranian experts is at registration stage and will set Iran as a technical pioneer in DMC field,” Bazmi said, adding that the research center has been working on this exclusive processing with economically justifiable value-added derivatives for six years due to the low cost involved.

Based on DMC process, by applying caustic solution of mercaptans to the crude, M2S and CS2 are removed and heavy active mercaptans turn into stable organic and nontoxic compounds. So when certain types of crude oil have sour sulfurous compositions, the DMC process increases refining recovery rate and also plays a significant role in sweetening condensate.

This technology is going to be prevailing in future oil and gas market and will have an impact on oil swap deals globally, the director stated in conclusion.
