In a tweet on Sunday, Zarif wrote, “‘Surrealism’ is now the US' modus operandi in its foreign affairs: While itself violates UNSCR 2231—and even threatens to punish those who don't wish to violate it in abiding with illegal US sanctions—it now falsely accuses Iran of violating the very SAME resolution. #Hypocrisy”
US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo had tweeted about Iran on Saturday, saying that Iran “has just test-fired a medium range ballistic missile that’s capable of carrying multiple warheads. This test violates UNSCR 2231.” He condemned such activities and called upon Iran to stop these measures.
The first response to Pompeo was made by Bahram Ghasemi, Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman, who said Sunday that Iran's missile program has a defensive nature, and no UN Security Council resolution bans Iran from missile program or tests.
Also, Spokesman for the Iranian Armed Forces Brigadier General Abolfazl Shekarchi said Sunday that missile test and defense capabilities of the Islamic Republic are for deterrence purposes and that test-firing and developing missiles will continue.
