'Iran ready to coop. with UN in confronting ISIL'

TEHRAN, Oct. 20 (MNA) – The Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council Ali Shamkhani met with the United Nations special envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura on Monday morning and announced that Iran is ready to cooperate with the UN to confront terrorist groups.

On Monday morning, the United Nations special envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura met with the Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council Ali Shamkhani, and discussed issues on political and security developments in Syria.

Ali Shamkhani asserted that the international conferences to end the Syrian crisis have been futile and the formation of terrorist groups to oppose the democratically-elected government of Syria has backfired. He stressed the need for a revision of the erroneous policies and the support of the actual demands of the people and aid to maintain security and stability in the country.

“Despite the Syrian Government willingness to hold political negotiations with different Syrian parties,” Shamkhani said, “the irresponsible behavior of some western and regional countries by arming the opposition and provoking them to slaughter people has been the main barrier to the return of peace to Syria.”

He stressed that forming new terrorist groups to control other terrorist groups or trans-regional military intervention would only lead to further deterioration of the crisis.

“Islamic Republic of Iran will continue confronting terrorism to maintain security in the region within the framework of its humanitarian and principled policies,” said Shamkhani.

Staffan de Mistura, for his part, stressed the need to utilize the experiences and contributions of Iran to resolve the Syrian crisis.

“The humanitarian catastrophe which is going on in Syrian border towns shows that strategies based on the participation of all influencing countries in the region to confront the threat of terrorism must immediately be taken into consideration,” asserted de Mistura.

“A political solution to resolve the Syrian crisis is the best approach to dealing with ISIL,” said de Mistura.
