Abutaleb Students Call on Annan to Help Release of Their Teacher

TEHRAN, August 4 (Mehr News Agency) -- Students of documentary filmmaker Saeed Abutaleb on Sunday, condemning detention of two Iranian filmmakers by the coalition forces in Iraq, called on the United Nations (UN) Secretary General Kofi Annan to discuss the issue within the framework of international law and secure their freedom.

In a letter to Annan, the students mentioned that the UN is responsible for investigating violations of the international conventions and the rights of journalists, the Mehr News Agency reported.

Saeed Abutaleb, arrested by the U.S.-British Forces on July 1 in the southern Iraqi town of Diwaniyah for what the U.S. called "security Violation", has been chemistry teacher of the students.

The U.S. government has refused to provide any reason why their troops have been holding Iranian filmmakers Abutaleb and Soheil Karimi for over one month. This has deeply troubled the families of the reporters as well as the Iranian government.
