Iran's Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif arrived in Qatar on Tuesday for talks with Qatar's Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani and Qatari Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani.
During his meeting with his counterpart, the two sides highlighted the need for closer economic relations, and discussed the current tensions among Persian Gulf littoral states.
This is Zarif's first visit to Doha since Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates, and Egypt cut ties with Qatar in June.
Zarif then voiced Iran’s readiness for long-term cooperation with Qatar and deeming the Arab country as a good economic partner for the Islamic Republic.
The Qatari side, for his part, expressed his county’s readiness to sign the past agreements reached between the two countries, stressing that Qatar’s goal is to develop economic cooperation alongside political relations.
Zarif’s visit to Qatar came on the heels of a visit to Oman, during which he held talks with Omani officials on cooperation on energy, the economy and transit, as well as the potential transfer of Iranian gas through the Sultanate of Oman to India.
