Behrouz Kamalvandi, Spokesman for the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) made the comment in reaction to the remarks by IAEA Director General Yukiya Amano who said in his statement to the agency’s Board of Governors on Thursday that “for the second time since implementation of the JCPOA began, Iran’s inventory of heavy water exceeded 130 metric tons. The IAEA head, howerever, went on to add that Iran’s stock of heavy water will decrease following the transfer to the level agreed under the JCPOA.
“Under the nuclear agreement, we should export our extra heavy water to international markets,” Kamalvandi added. “So far, we have sold 70 metric tons and negotiations are underway with other international buyers, especially the Europeans.”
He went on to add, “as long as the JCPOA is in effect, we will continue to transfer our excess of heavy water to international markets.”
Kamalvandi further highlighted the remarks by Amano in regard to Iran’s full commitment to its safeguard, protocol and JCPOA-related obligations.
Meanwhile, Iran’s Ambassador to the International Atomic Energy Agency Reza Najafi, said at the meeting of the IAEA’s Board of Governors in Vienna that “the deal’s 130-ton limit on Iran’s heavy water stockpile is only an estimate”, adding “Iran has expressed its readiness to export its high-quality excess of heavy water to international buyers even in greater amounts.”
