TEHRAN, Sep. 14 (MNA) – Iranian men chess players ranked 16th and finished in the 1st place in Group B in the open section of the 42nd World Chess Olympiad in Baku, while the women team stood at the 11th place.

In the 11th and final round of the 42nd World Chess Olympiad in Azerbaijan’s Baku, Iran’s men national chess team won against Chile 3.5 to 0.5, thus securing the 16th ranking among the 180 participating countries. The ranking brought the first place for the Iranian team in Group B, which is the best result in the history of Iran’s chess competitions in world Olympiads.

The Iranian team comprised Ehsasn Ghaem Maghami, Parham Maghsoodloo, Shahin Lorparizangeneh, and Aryan Gholami.

In the women’s section, the Iranian team defeated Azerbaijan 3.5 to 0.5 in the final round and finished in the 11th place, with a total of 7 wins, 1 draw, and 3 losses.

The Iranian women chess players included Atousa Pourkashiyan, Mitra Hejazipour, Ghazal Hakimifard, and Homa Alavi.

The 42nd World Chess Olympiad was held om 1-14 September in Baku. More than 180 teams took part in the open section, and more than 140 teams fought for the medals in the women's section. 

Both tournaments were played according to the Swiss system with 11 rounds. The winners were determined by the number of match points they have scored. In this year’s tournament, the United States won the championship title in the ppen’s section while China stood at the first place in the women’s section.
