RIO DE JANEIRO, Sep. 11 (MNA) – Iranian sitting volleyball players defeated China in three straight sets in their first match at the fifteenth Summer Paralympic Games.

Taking a firm first step in the opening encounter of sitting volleyball event, the Iranian squad obtained a sweeping victory over Chinese rivals.

The Iranian side, who is competing in Men's Preliminaries Pool B, took up China’s sitting volleyball outfit in Pavilion 6 of Riocentro where presence of five thousand Brazilian spectators had added to the beauty of the match.

Iran’s tallest national and member of sitting volleyball team Morteza Mehrzad, with a height of 246 centimeters, offered an eye-catching performance attracting attention of spectators and the media.

The Persians maintained the upper hand in three consecutive sets (25-22, 25-13 and 25-14) to set up a date with Bosnia & Herzegovina on September 13.

Iran’s national women sitting volleyball team, however, conceded a 3-0 defeat against US rivals in their opening match on Saturday.

The Mina delegation of Iranian Paralympians at the Rio Paralympics is comprised of 111 sportspeople who are competing at athletics, powerlifting, Men and Women’s sitting volleyball, archery, shooting, judo, football, 5-a-side football, wheelchair basketball, swimming, sailing, cycling as well as 7-a-sife football.
