Iran’s 5-a-side team reaches semifinals in Rio

RIO DE JANEIRO, Sep. 14 (MNA) – National 5-a-side football team of Iran drew against Brazil on Tuesday in order to advance to the semifinals as the second best team in Pool A.

In their final Men's Preliminaries Pool A bout at 2016 Rio Paralympics, the Iranian squad face host country rivals in the Olympic Tennis Center.

Despite drawing their game against Brazil, Iranian para footballers attained the much-needed one point and secured a place in the semifinals.

Meysam Shojaeian, Amir Pourrazavi, Hossein Rajabpour, Behzad Zadaliasghar and Ahmadreza Shahhosseini played for the Iranian side under the supervision of Javad Felfeli as the coach.

Brazil offered a superior performance in the first interval while in-time reactions by Iran’s goalkeeper Shojaeian thwarted all attacks by the rivals.

The Persians gained a better control over the match during the second half though they squandered two proper opportunities for netting goals for the fixture to end in a tie.

Accordingly, Iranian 5-a-side footballers could collect a total of five points in the preliminaries round to find its way to the next round.

Meanwhile in Pool B, Argentina overcame China in 2-1 in penalty shoot out to set up a date with Iran on Thursday.

Football 5-a-side, full of amazing dribbles and shooting, is the visually impaired version of the world’s most popular sport and has been part of the Paralympic Games since Athens 2004.
