Faisal Mekdad who is in Tehran for a visit and meetings had a meeting with Ali Larijani and told him that Bashar al-Assad had given him a mission to convey his and Syrian people’s warmest gratitude and regards to Leader of the Islamic Revolution, government, and Iranian people; “Assad’s visit to Moscow and meeting with Putin was historic; the meeting was critical especially after Russian military action in Syria extending support for president Assad; we assess Russia’s intervention on a stark contrast to US misguided intervention and policies on Syria,” he told Larijani.
“US-led coalition’s intervention in Syria lacks legitimacy since it is an action against democratically elected president and government; US sought in Syria to lead a war of attrition and destroying Syrian infrastructure; it also sought to secure Zionist regime of threats the regime faces from Syria as an important player of resistance,” he emphasized.
Mekdad criticized Saudi Arabia as ‘totally in line with Zionist regime; “Syria highly appreciates Iran’s Leader’s remarks about setting as redline the Syrian territorial integrity, a thing indicating the value given to beliefs and opinions of the Syrian people and government,” he said.
Syrian deputy-FM also touched upon Vienna edition of Syrian talks, describing it as important to the future of Syria.
Ali Larijani for his part, believed that the situation on the ground in Syria had been greatly improved compared to the past and “will be improved further.”
Mekdad also was received by Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif on Wednesday where Mr. Zarif reiterated Iran’s ‘principled’ policy on Syria, which was often quoted as “Syrian people should decide on their future, and others could only be a catalyst and a facilitator at best.”
“Vienna conference was a good ground for political dynamism in finding peaceful ways to the crisis; we believe that there is a political solution and no other path should be imposed on Syrian people,” Zarif told in the meeting.
