New Japanese govt. keen to expand ties with Iran: Okada

TEHRAN, Dec. 21 (MNA) – The main policy of Japan’s new government is to strengthen ties with Iran, Japanese Foreign Minister Katsuya Okada announced on Monday.

Katsuya made the remarks in a meeting with Iranian Supreme National Security Council Secretary Saeed Jalili who is on an official tour of Japan.

Katsuya stressed the importance of expanding relations with Iran in all areas.

Elsewhere in his remarks, he said Iran should play a more active role in efforts to help stabilize Southwest Asia. He stated that Tehran and Tokyo ought to further increase cooperation to help reconstruct Afghanistan.

Katsuya also invited Jalili to visit Japan’s nuclear plants.

Jalili expressed hope that the two countries will establish closer cooperation as the new Tokyo government is revising its relations with the West - particularly the United States - and focusing more on Asia.

The security official went on to say that Iran-Japan cooperation is based on security, stability and development, he added.

The two sides also called for the continuation of regular talks on bilateral, regional and international issues.

Commenting on Iran’s nuclear package of proposals, he said the package can open new opportunities for cooperation between the two countries at regional and international levels.

The package drawn up by Iran has set goals for a total nuclear disarmament and a global cooperation for a peaceful use of nuclear energy by all nations without any discrimination.
